KEYNOTE SPEAKER - RaDonda Vaught BSN
RaDonda Vaught was the subject of one of the highest profile healthcare criminal cases in recent years. She holds a BSN and a Certificate in Leadership from Western Kentucky University. While working as a BSN prepared registered nurse, Mrs. Vaught committed a medication error that ended the life of a patient in 2017.
She was charged under administrative law by the Tennessee Department of Health, leading to the revocation of her nursing license by the Tennessee Board of Nursing in a July 2021 hearing. Additionally, she was charged under criminal law and found guilty by jury trial of two felony charges in March of 2022: Negligent Homicide, and Abuse of an Impaired Adult, with placement on an Elder Abuse registry in the state of Tennessee.
Mrs. Vaught is uniquely qualified to speak first hand on the impact this sentinel event has had on her life and her profession, along with the implications of the legal actions that followed. A passionate advocate for safety and improvement, her story will be one that is not easily forgotten.

Debbie Broadfield, President of Capitol Edge Consulting, LLC, has been lobbying since 2008. In 2013, Broadfield, along with Sue Clark, formed Capitol Edge Consulting LLC, a BEP certified women owned and operated Illinois lobbying and consulting firm focused on relationship building, advocacy, and achieving desired results. Broadfield served as Vice President from 2013 until 2023. In January 2024, she became President of Capitol Edge Consulting, LLC. Prior to lobbying, Broadfield had 5 years of experience as a legislative assistant in the district office of former State of Illinois Senator Bill Brady. In this position she provided direct interaction with constituent concerns that often led to legislative proposals. Her skills include, but are not limited to, policy research, organization and management of multiple projects, and a keen understanding of the political process. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University, Broadfield was a child welfare specialist for over 5 years, both in a private agency and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Broadfield is a 2004 graduate of the Illinois Lincoln Excellence in Public Service Series. In 2008, she completed the Illinois Society of Association Executive Certified Leadership Series.

Registered Nurse
Matthew Harless is an experienced nurse and advocate for bedside care, whose journey into healthcare began at the age of 21 when he worked in a therapeutic group home for troubled teen-agers. His deep commitment to caring for others led him to establish a foster home, where he and his wife nurtured hundreds of children, adopting two who have since thrived as adults. Transition-ing to a role as an Adult Protective Services Investigator in Indiana at 30, Matthew worked closely with legal authorities to protect vulnerable adults, an experience that deeply influenced his deci-sion to pursue nursing. His nursing career started at 32, encompassing roles in psychiatric care, emergency depart-ments, and as a resource nurse across multiple hospitals in Indiana. Currently, he is a resource nurse at Franciscan Health, serving three hospitals. Beyond clinical practice, Matthew is dedi-cated to mentoring and training the next generation of nurses. He is also a vocal advocate for nursing issues, engaging with legislative representatives and sharing his insights and experiences through writing and public speaking. He has authored a book on nursing and hosted a podcast fo-cused on bedside care, underscoring his commitment to the profession and its future.
