Speakers: Daniela Vargas, MSN, MPH, MA- Bioethics, RN, PHN & Kenya V. Beard EdD, AGACNP-BC, CNE, ANEF, FAAN

Daniela Vargas, MSN, MPH, MA- Bioethics, RN, PH

Daniela is currently a doctoral student at the University of San Francisco’s DNP Population Health Leadership program where her work focuses on addressing racism in nursing, creating anti-racist nursing practices, and creating workforce support programs for Black, Brown, and Indigenous nursing students to successfully matriculate, graduate and post-graduation opportunities. Daniela also graduated from USF where she received her MSN and MPH in 2017 as well as Loyola University Chicago’s M.A. in Bioethics and Health Policy where her capstone focused on the ethical implications of the nursing profession acknowledging DACA and undocumented nursing students and nurses.  Daniela currently works as a nurse in the clinical setting in the Bay Area within the birthing community providing education and support to women in the prenatal and postpartum periods as well as providing care rooted in reproductive justice primarily to Black, Brown and Indigenous women.

Kenya V. Beard EdD, AGACNP-BC, CNE, ANEF, FAAN

Kenya is the Associate Provost for Social Mission and Academic Excellence at Chamberlain University.  As a 2012 Macy Faculty Scholar, she propagated research and best practices to advance the needle on diversity, inclusion, and health equity. In her former role as Senior Fellow at the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University School of Nursing, she wrote blogs and co-produced health care disparity segments for the Center’s radio program, HealthCetera, on WBAI-FM for an audience of over 400,000 listeners. Numerous schools across the country have consulted with Dr. Beard on ways to strengthen the capacity of educators to create culturally responsive learning environments that speak to and mitigate the ways in which implicit bias impacts student and patient outcomes. Her publications, like the recently co-authored paper Looking Backwards to Move Forward: Using a Social Mission Lens in Nursing Education, amplify the importance of graduating a diverse, well-prepared workforce that can eliminate health care disparities.
